EXOTIC LIFE CYCLE. "Uninfected gammarids dive downwards when disturbed and cover themselves in the mud. On the other hand, gammarids infected by parasitic worms glide along the water surface to seek a solid support. This typical clinging behaviour exposes the gammarid to predators such as frogs, fish and birds, which are the parasites’ next host." https://lnkd.in/e2g9KSe View in LinkedIn

PLEASE EAT MY HOST. "Infection by the parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis leads to altered drifting behavior in Gammarus pulex, an intermediate host of P. laevis. This altered behavior increases G. pulex’s predation risk by P. laevis’s definitive host. The induced behavioral alteration in the host thus leads to the parasite’s increased success in completing its life cycle." https://lnkd.in/e4MsheB View in LinkedIn

WHY NATURE. "The more I study nature, the more I become impressed […] that the contrivances and beautiful adaptations [acquired through natural selection] transcend in an incomparable degree [those] which the most fertile imagination of the most imaginative man could suggest with unlimited time at his disposal." FRAGMENT FROM NATURE continues for a second weekend on the subject of parasite-host relationships. This weekend focuses somewhat on host reactions and defenses, as well as the gene targets within hosts for the parasites. For humans, it takes sophisticated research labs to find gene targets. For nature, it takes millions of years of evolution by trial and error. View in LinkedIn

MODULAR FUNCTIONALITY. "The basic behavioral competences of these agents are absent in inanimate nature and resemble core sets of behavioral rules that are fundamentally shared by RNA agents but yet may change or adapt to varying adaptational purposes. This explains their module like character." https://lnkd.in/eUYvi8e View in LinkedIn

CONSORTIAL AGENTS. "We have tried to exemplify the multiple roles of consortia of ribozymatic agents emerging from compatible stem-loop structures that work together to build RNA viruses and create infection-derived noncoding RNA networks without which life cannot function." https://lnkd.in/eUYvi8e View in LinkedIn

TOP-DOWN DIRECTION. "Agency, context, meaning, interpretation and behaviour are features of biological organization that can be independent of the DNA-based code script. In living organisms, these cognitive features feed back, in a top-to-bottom manner, into the DNA sequences." https://lnkd.in/eeiUHXC View in LinkedIn

VIRAL REMAINS DRIVE EVOLUTION. "Mobile elements within genomes have driven genome evolution in diverse ways. Particularly in plants and mammals, retrotransposons have accumulated to constitute a large fraction of the genome and have shaped both genes and the entire genome." https://lnkd.in/eiBC2Fd View in LinkedIn

BEHAVIORAL FEVER. "Zebrafish display behavioural fever that acts to promote extensive and highly specific temperature-dependent changes in the brain transcriptome. The observed coupling of the immune response to fever acts at the gene–environment level to promote a robust, highly specific time-dependent anti-viral response that, under viral infection, increases survival." https://lnkd.in/enUcngE View in LinkedIn
