MINERAL BALANCE. “When soil resources, such as P or N, limit photosynthesis, C is in excess. Mycorrhizal fungal hyphae explore the soil volume for P and N, and transport the nutrient (over distances of cm to m) in exchange for excess plant C. Mycorrhizal hyphae are more efficient at exploring the soil volume than even fine roots. As long as P or N are limiting, plants will support mycorrhizal fungi.”
