CATASTROPHIC FLARES. “If a giant solar flare hit the Earth, it could knock out the entire power grid. The elecromagnetic pulse—or EMP—created by such an event could wipe out electricity for months on end, creating a global catastrophe. “This is a real and present danger,” the White House’s assistant director for space weather tells the Post. Something like that almost did happen in 2012, when NASA says we were nearly hit by two large plasma clouds. “If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces.”
