IF SUNLIGHT is just a fraction of the total energy in our local universe, it would seem strange that life forms, in their ingenious complexity and variability, have not found ways to tap this energy source. Photosynthesis appears biochemically simple, and quite well described, but we are having a tough time harnessing or replicating the Green Machine. Are we missing something in the details?
