COMPLETE REANIMATION OF EXTINCT VIRUSES. Endogenous retroviruses are very common in mammalian DNA, constituting about 8% of human DNA. These are mostly derived from extinct ancient viruses. Many research groups have reanimated these extinct retroviruses and generated infectious functional strains by inserting a part into a modern mouse retrovirus. In the case cited herein, the retrovirus was 4 million years old. ”
