TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE. In grad school, my Professor could not be persuaded to stop accepting small fees from industry, and instead fund his lab by setting up a private company. It was seen as dirty. Five years later, he was on five boards and had got the message loud and clear. Translational medicine is about moving concepts to patients. Translational science is about putting great ideas to work to solve big societal problems. Academic-industry partnerships have time and again spawned new industries, jobs, innovation, and wealth.
