THE GANGES RIVER has had legendary curative powers despite abundant rotting carcasses, sewage, and filth. This was attributed to bacteriophages (phages) in the 1890s by Ernest Hankin and Félix d’Hérelle, where the phages in the river could be protected against cholera and dysentery.
