SCALE MATTERS. The cell membrane is only 7-9 nm thick, while a soap bubble is 10-1,000 nm. A small molecule is 1 nm and an animal cell 10 um. However, we consider that soap bubbles are very fragile. Soap bubbles and membranes have some similarities. How then is a cell membrane strong enough to support a robust organism like a whale? The answer is: scale matters.
