THE 1947 AGRICULTURE ACT “drove changes in farming policy that had a significant impact on farmland. Hedgerows were lost as fields became larger, chemical use increased and the quality and quantity of farmland habitats diminished. Samples of the seed bank in arable soils suggest the number of weed seeds declined by 1% per year during the 20th century.”
