“PHOTOISOMERISM occurs at a remarkable rapid rate of <200 fs and proceeds at a very high efficiency or yield. The process of photoisomerization involves transitioning of energy between different electronic states of the retinal molecule. Upon absorption of photons, the retinal molecule undergoes electronic transitioning from a resting ground state to a higher energy excited state. Further transfer of energy results in conformational change of rhodopsin and subsequently signal transduction."
