SO ENDS the first weekend on the examination of whether life is “red in tooth and claw.” When viewed from the energy flow from the sun to the broad photosynthetic base of creatures that support an increasingly narrow pyramid of creatures that feed off those who convert sunlight to complex molecules, it is clear that life on our planet may be better expressed as “green in leaf and stalk.”
