SO ENDS this first of two weekends on the biological implications of a south African termite mound that serves as a breathing organ for the superorganism, how it is constructed, functions, and is repaired upon damage. The repair function relies on short lived workers who must somehow analyze the damage and also transmit enough knowledge of the structure to the next generation of workers.
