Gothic alabaster tombs and sculptures were unable to use mechanical friction to melt the upper layer of rock and achieve a high gloss shine, due to the lack of machines, and the surfaces were polished by specialty tradesmen for many months to achieve a partial glass, and often also painted by a separate trade.
