As noted above, the most luminous observed quasars require accretion rates such that ∼10(8)–10(9) M⊙ of gas must be funnelled on to the BH over a time-scale of <10(8.5) yr, i.e. nearly the whole gas content of a good-sized galaxy must be fed on to the BH in roughly a dynamical time.” (BH = black hole; SMBH = supermassive black hole; (M⊙ = solar mass).
