OUTDATED WATER REGULATIONS. "Government and independent scientists have scrutinized thousands of those chemicals ... and identified hundreds associated with a risk of cancer and other diseases at small concentrations in drinking water ... But not one chemical has been added to ... the Safe Drinking Water Act since 2000."(2009). http://lnkd.in/d9YTiN5 View in LinkedIn

NEED FOR AN UPDATE. “For years, people said that America has the cleanest drinking water in the world,” said William K. Reilly, the E.P.A. administrator under President George H. W. Bush. “That was true 20 years ago. But people don’t realize how many new chemicals have emerged and how much more pollution has occurred. If they did, we would see very different attitudes.” http://lnkd.in/d9YTiN5 View in LinkedIn

GOLD MINING WITH CYANIDE. "(In the) 2000 Baia Mare cyanide spill, when a break in holding pond dam at a mine waste reprocessing facility near Baia Mare in northern Romania released approximately 100,000 cubic metres ... of waste water contaminated with heavy metal sludge and up to 120 long tons ... of cyanide into the Tisza River." http://lnkd.in/dpTKQ6m View in LinkedIn

"INITIATIVE 137 was a response to the abysmal track record of open pit cyanide leach mining in Montana, as exemplified by cleanup fiascos at the Golden Sunlight, Zortman/Landusky, and Kendall mines and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality's failure to adequately regulate such mines as required by state law." http://www.savethesantacruzaquifer.info/Chemicals.htm View in LinkedIn

MILITARY WATER POLLUTION. "The world's military forces are responsible for the release of more than two thirds of CFC-113 into the ozone layer. The Pentagon generates five times more toxins than the five major US chemical companies combined. The US military is the largest single source of US environmental pollution." http://www.sdissues.net/SDIN/uploads/Mil-Envir%2520JOBURG%2520version.doc View in LinkedIn

THE HYDRAULIC FRACKING INDUSTRY extracts oil and gas from underground reserves by pumping large amounts of undisclosed chemicals into the subterranean sources, and is exempt from the Safe Drinking Water Act. Over 90% of all US gas and oil units use fracking. There will be a separate series on fracking in a few weeks. http://lnkd.in/dp2ThBf View in LinkedIn

THE WATER POLLUTION reports I have selected simply reinforce the issue that the groundwater quality is deteriorating, that some of these chemicals will never go away, and that the brew of chemicals opens the door for numerous reactions with each other and with chlorine used for microbial control in drinking water. PURE DRINKING WATER GOALS ARE BACKFIRING, as we learn more about the undesirable reactions of chlorine with groundwater contaminants of many sources, generating a large number of toxic compounds with adverse health effects. The 100 year old water purification technology no longer serves us as well as we had hoped. View in LinkedIn

TOXIC BY-PRODUCTS. "When drinking water treatment plants disinfect water, a wide range of disinfection by-products (DBPs) of health and regulatory concern are formed." Given the complexity of molecules in groundwater, the reaction possibilities are very large. http://rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/367/1904/4077.full View in LinkedIn
