EAT SMART. "This is why the idea that you can lose weight by counting calories simply doesn't work. After fructose, other sugars and grains are likely the most excessively consumed food that promotes weight gain and chronic disease. This also includes food items that are typically viewed as healthy, such as fruit juice or even large amounts of high fructose fruits." https://lnkd.in/exrg2Cj View in LinkedIn

FRAGMENT FROM NATURE this weekend is about cell membranes, related to soap bubbles and also to structured EZ water from the previous two Fragment postings. Cell membranes are often overlooked as some type of bag, whereas they are dynamic, complex and fascination preconditions to the life of every cell. View in LinkedIn

CELL MEMBRANES. "Every cell in your body is surrounded by a cell membrane, a thin, flexible wall made of fatty molecules that maintains the integrity of the nucleus and the rest of the cell's interior. Cells need a way to take in nutrients and expel waste across the membrane, and generally this involves lodging special proteins in the membrane. These proteins form holes that can open and close, acting as gateways to the interior." https://lnkd.in/e2sriga View in LinkedIn

SCALE MATTERS. The cell membrane is only 7-9 nm thick, while a soap bubble is 10-1,000 nm. A small molecule is 1 nm and an animal cell 10 um. However, we consider that soap bubbles are very fragile. Soap bubbles and membranes have some similarities. How then is a cell membrane strong enough to support a robust organism like a whale? The answer is: scale matters. https://lnkd.in/efTir2i View in LinkedIn

"MANY ASPECTS of biological function and structure are governed by weak non-covalent bonds between and within single molecules. Mechanical force plays a key role in modulating the kinetics of these interactions, which in turn can regulate more complex biological processes." https://lnkd.in/eHMNJbv View in LinkedIn

DIFFERENT FORCES. "Although gravitational forces become less important on the micron length scale, intermolecular and surface forces are only significant over ranges of 0.2 nm (weak interatomic/molecular) to 100 nm (micron sized particles). This is because thermal motion of the molecules and particles has a tendency to disrupt these interactions on longer length scales." https://lnkd.in/exZCxMK View in LinkedIn

SCIENCE OF THE SMALL. "The ability of cell membranes to adopt a great variety of shapes is one of the most striking and intriguing properties of cells. Computer simulations indicate that the forces necessary for this shaping arise from the concerted efforts of many proteins integrated within the membrane, mediated by the 4.7-5.2 nm thick lipid bilayer that form the membrane matrix, and resists strong bending."" MEMBRANE SHAPES. "In the cell there is a great variety of membrane shapes" including: flat; cylindrical tubules of 30-100 nm diameter; spheres (endocytosis, exocytosis and cell trafficking) of 40-100 nm diameter; and saddle shapes if the Golgi. "These membranes undergo relentless shape transformations, and in many cases, drastic rearrangements of membrane structures, leading to their fusion and fission." " " View in LinkedIn
