This appears to be a move towards in vitro screening of patient subset tissues for new drug candidates, or a 'zero phase' clinical trial, rather than screening in animal disease models. This is another branch, it seems, of the recognition of the power of personalized medicine: patient subpopulations with reduced heterogeneity. Animal models can be poor predictors of clinical efficacy in man, and for many diseases, there are not even such imperfect models. This may also be a technology on the verge of the awesome dream of being able to manufacture human organ in the test tube. http://lnkd.in/CXkW8P View in LinkedIn

This appears to be a move that recognizes the power of personalized medicine -- reduced patient heterogeneity, or a 'zero phase' clinical trial for drug screening, obviating the sometimes misleading results from animal models. Also, implicitly, the possibility of growing donor organs in a test tube. Awesome! http://lnkd.in/CXkW8P View in LinkedIn

Fantastic start and so much in the right direction. The first real key is mentoring these young entrepreneurs. The second real key is follow-on funding. We say "Mind The Gap" in the UK underground. The same applies to some of the businesses that will be seeded by these vital funds. The higher value enterprises, that will create a lot of jobs, will be facing The Gap as they mature, and it appears obvious that tax incentives for investments of this sort are critical. This includes keeping a healthy Venture Capital incentive alive and well. http://lnkd.in/--ct3d View in LinkedIn

It is really heartening to see rare diseases attract Pharma investments with increasing frequency. This trend promises future relief for the patients with these afflictions. The big issue remaining is how society may reward these developments without the need for drug pricing to be the only solution, where the patient and their family bear the brunt of the reward system for innovation. This needs an innovative remedy through tax or other incentives. http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNGhdk6rmj2wtFEgqlpE6eAR6OfoMA&url=http://www.bizjournals.com/philadelphia/news/2013/01/09/shire-to-buy-firm-working-on-genetic.html View in LinkedIn

Important to remember this: workaholic lives, mega stress, being bombarded by the world is not the only option for your life on this small blue planet. This has become the paradigm for the US, and I am sad about that. The very concept of balance is not even a serious consideration." "I have to say that after recently moving from San Francisco to Spain, the quality of life questions have resurfaced. While no society is perfect, I watch with fascination as Spaniards continue to seek a quality, balanced, value-centric and family-centric life. Remember. We have options! http://lnkd.in/cFkyPY View in LinkedIn
