GUIDE DOGS begone! How about an intelligent trained rat who is able to control your wheelchair by its thoughts as you navigate the streets? Or guide machinery in mine search and rescues? The Japanese are developing robotics to assist the elderly. What about our rat-machine interface? The examples are obviously getting silly, but I hope my point is made. BRAIN HYBRIDS: Ways of knowing are likely different between species. A cockroach will have a different sensate and problem solving set of skills than a baboon or an octopus. A bat and a whale rely on radar signals to inform them of their world. Homing pigeons have some GPS machinery. The household cat has a brain partly dominated by its olfactory system. We are within sight of the first deep understanding of these skills. What if an octopus and a beetle were paired to solve simple problems? Open source begone. STEM CELLS FOR STROKE, new advance on recovery of memory deficits following stroke in mice following stem cell treatment. Six stroke patients in a different recent study showed modest improvements when injected with a different brew of stem cells, but no adverse effects.
