FRAGMENT FROM NATURE considers the subject of topographic scale in nature. Judging from the complete paucity of literature on the subject, biologists appear rather oblivious of the issue of scale, and this partly explains why the vast majority of biological investigations are earth-centric and pre-Copernican. CHRISTMAS RANT. Bacteria and viruses are the apogee of outsourcing, sublimely streamlined, can survive heat, pressures shock and stellar conditions that no other cellular life form can. They steer our very genomes, the hand behind the wheel. They form super organisms which have advanced problem-solving capacities.
