This is the extraordinary gel that is poured from cup to cup across time in the continuum of life. We have come from cells being just a random bag of chemicals to being highly structured molecular ecosystems. It is hard not to be sympathetic with the Vitalists who ascribed uneducable and quasi-magical properties to cells. Given the phenomenon of emergence, that is probably magic enough for us.
