NOT INTERESTED! “Lobbying by Carl Sagan and others, along with careful bureaucratic and political persuasion, eventually restored the stature of the program, and by 1988 NASA was ready once again to begin searching in the radio despite some Congressional opposition.” https://lnkd.in/djnMhU6 View in LinkedIn

DETECTION OF NOXIOUS STIMULI. “Here we show that nociception in mice is altered by a 30 Hz field with a peak amplitude more than 1000 times weaker than the static component of the geomagnetic field. When mice are exposed to an ambient magnetic field-shielded environment 1 h a day for five consecutive days, a strong analgesic (i.e. antinociception) response is induced by day 5. introduction of a 30 Hz time-varying field as weak as 33 nT has a strong effect, reducing the analgesic effect by 60 per cent. Such sensitivity is surprisingly high.” http://rsif.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/10/81/20121046.short View in LinkedIn

HALL OF SHAME OVER SETI. “By the 1970’s, NASA was considering investing significant resources into the field and commissioned a detailed study on a “maximal” radio SETI program, Project Cyclops. The high cost of that vision and the baseless conflation of the endeavor with UFOlogy, science fiction, and tabloid fodder led to political troubles. In 1978 Senator William Proxmire gave the NASA SETI program one of his “Golden Fleece” awards (for “fleecing” the taxpayer for a frivolous project) and successfully ended it.” https://lnkd.in/djnMhU6 View in LinkedIn

EFFECTS ON OOCYTES. “According to previous reports, cell death induction in the oocyte was observed only in the case of microwave exposure and not after exposure to other stress factors as toxic chemicals or food deprivation. Now it is also observed for the first time after extremely low frequency magnetic field exposure.” https://lnkd.in/d38KfZb View in LinkedIn

EFFECTS ON FLIES. “In the present experiments, the effect of 50-Hz alternating magnetic field on Drosophila melanogaster reproduction was studied...exposed to three different intensities of the extremely low frequency magnetic field (1, 11, and 21 G) continuously during the first 5 days of their adult lives...The magnetic field was found to decrease reproduction by up to 4.3 %. The effect increased with increasing field intensities. The decline in reproductive capacity was found to be due to severe DNA damage (DNA fragmentation) and consequent cell death induction.” https://lnkd.in/d38KfZb View in LinkedIn

EFFECTS ON BIRDS. “Although there are considerable reports of magnetic field effects (MFE) on organisms, very little is known so far about the MFE-related signal transduction pathways. Here we establish a manipulative near-zero magnetic field (NZMF) to investigate the potential signal transduction pathways involved in MFE. We show that exposure of migratory white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera, to the NZMF results in delayed egg and nymphal development, increased frequency of brachypterous females, and reduced longevity of macropterous female adults.” https://lnkd.in/ggMJNzs View in LinkedIn

EFFECTS ON BEES. “The effects of a time-compressed simulated geomagnetic storm (TC-SGS) on the nest-exiting flight angles of another stingless bee, Tetragonisca angustula, are presented. Under an applied SGS, either on the horizontal or vertical component of the geomagnetic field, both nest-exiting flight angles, dip and azimuth, are statistically different from those under geomagnetic conditions.” https://lnkd.in/dv_w-gS View in LinkedIn

MAGNETIC SENSIBILITY. “There is evidence for robust interactions of weak extremely low frequency magnetic fields with biological systems. We suggest that the biological basis is likely to be found in the weak (∼50 nT) daily swing in the geomagnetic field that results from the solar tidal force on free electrons in the upper atmosphere, a remarkably constant effect exactly in phase with the solar diurnal change.” http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3109/15368378.2013.809579 View in LinkedIn
