WOOD-WIDE WEB. "Trees in a forest organize themselves into far-flung networks, using the underground web of mycorrhizal fungi which connects their roots to exchange information and even goods. This “wood-wide web,” as the title of one paper put it, allows scores of trees in a forest to convey warnings of insect attacks, and also to deliver carbon, nitrogen, and water to trees in need." https://lnkd.in/dvFaNgd View in LinkedIn

INFORMATION CONTROL. "Plasmodesmata controlling information flow. Plasmodesmatal connections enable movement of proteins and nucleic acids as well as smaller molecules between plant cells. Movement of transcription factors and nucleic acids has the potential to activate or repress genes in cells remote from the source by activation of DNA methylation or by mRNA translation; oligonucleotides with specific sequences can silence genes." http://aob.oxfordjournals.org/content/92/1/1.full View in LinkedIn

REGULATORY LOOPS. “In higher plants, there are circadian rhythms of photosynthesis that are controlled by the nuclear-encoded circadian oscillator. This implies that the nuclear-encoded circadian oscillator controls events within plastids through nucleus to plastid anterograde signaling.” https://lnkd.in/dAX4kdh View in LinkedIn

STIMULUS RESPONSE. "That the various parts of plants communicate with each other has been established by many experiments. Various surgical treatments (such as removal of root or shoot or leaves, mimicking predation or other damage), resource stress (lack of light or water or minerals) or exposure of one part of a plant to varying resource levels, give rise to specific changes in growth and development elsewhere in the plant, indicating communication of the stimulus." http://aob.oxfordjournals.org/content/92/1/1.full View in LinkedIn

INFORMATION FLOW. "Intelligence requires a network of elements capable of adaptively variable information flow to underpin intelligent behaviour. In animals, nerve cells are specifically adapted by structure to enable rapid phenotypic adjustments and computation. But, critically, a network requires communication between the elements." http://aob.oxfordjournals.org/content/92/1/1.full View in LinkedIn

FRAGMENT FROM NATURE continues and concludes this weekend from last weekend on the theme of the return of the whales to the sea after their epic transition from salt walter to the land. Few transitions during evolution have been so dramatic and challenging from so many perspectives, but to have done it twice is beyond remarkable. Loosing ones wings is one thing, but living entirely in water after being land adapted once is quite another thing entirely. View in LinkedIn

RIGOROUS APPROACH. "Since memory is a necessary pre-requisite of learning—an essential component of intelligence, we need to examine critically the previously proposed examples of intelligent behavior in plants, and for the sake of certainty discard all cases where involvement of memory cannot be safely inferred. We may even have to give up some potentially relevant phenomena to be sure: what we need are criteria for identification of cases of plant memory and learning that are beyond any doubt." https://lnkd.in/dfsCv77 View in LinkedIn
