WHEN THE SUN DIES. “But when the stars died, they vaporized or engulfed and incinerated their inner planets, leaving only the bodies that resided in the chilly outposts. Over time, the dwarfs shredded and consumed many of the survivors as well. These decimated systems offer a grim look at the fate of our own solar system when the sun dies five billion years from now.” https://lnkd.in/dpMBcCM View in LinkedIn

MIRROR EARTHS. “There are more than a dozen white dwarfs in our galaxy that are orbited by asteroids, comets and perhaps even planets -- entire graveyards of worlds. While the stars were alive, they rose every day in the skies of these worlds. They gently warmed the soil and stirred the wind. Living organisms may have soaked up their rays.” https://lnkd.in/dpMBcCM View in LinkedIn

“WHITE DWARFS must not be stars so much as the corpses of stars. Each white dwarf was once much like our sun and shone with the same brilliance. But then it began to run out of fuel and entered its stormy death throes, swelling to 100 times its previous size and brightening 10,000 fold, before shedding its outer laters and shriveling to a glowing cinder the size of Earth. For the rest of eternity, it will sit inertly, slowly fading to blackness.” https://lnkd.in/dpMBcCM View in LinkedIn

“THEOPHILUS Presbyter (fl. c. 1070–1125) is the pseudonymous author or compiler of a Latin text containing detailed descriptions of various medieval arts, a text commonly known as the Schedula diversarum artium ("List of various arts") or De diversis artibus ("On various arts"). 'Theophilus' was quite possibly a Benedictine monk. It has been suggested (particularly by Eckhard Freise) that Theophilus is the same person as the artisan monk Roger of Helmarshausen. Roger appears to have come from Stavelot Abbey in the Meuse River region, was active as an artist and author between 1100 and 1107 in St. Pantaleon's church in Cologne, and moved to Helmarshausen Abbey in 1107.” https://lnkd.in/dKA6i-T View in LinkedIn

THEOPHILUS, The Various Arts, De Diversis Artibus (medieval text, written between 1110 and 1140 AD) translated from the Latin with Introduction by C.R. Dodwell, then Fellow and Librarian, Trinity College, Cambridge, Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd (1961). This remarkable text illustrates in detail how mediaeval craftsmen worked. I quote both the excellent Introduction and the text. https://lnkd.in/dmDMw8U View in LinkedIn

FRAGMENT FROM NATURE for this and next weekend features a text from the early twelfth century England that was an authoritative summary of diverse craft techniques in that era. This book is a gem and fortunately has been republished. When I first read it some fifty years ago it left a deep impression, one that was further reinforced upon rereading it. Craftsmen of old had profound skills and deep knowledge. View in LinkedIn
