BLACK HOLE MODEL. “At these scales, the gas density dominates the matter density, and by smoothing the dark-matter density we remove any artefacts associated with the discrete representation of the dark-matter mass distribution.” https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-0873-4 View in LinkedIn

EVERY GALAXY HAS ONE. “According to the current paradigm, galaxies are surrounded by extensive dark matter halos, and galaxies can grow in size when they come close enough to other galaxies for the dark matter to induce a merger. Many galaxies are also known to contain a supermassive black hole (SBH) at their center, and it is commonly assumed that SBHs are universally present in early-type galaxies and in the bulges of disk galaxies, at least for galaxies above a certain mass.” https://lnkd.in/dhkbfnG View in LinkedIn

THIS ENDS the extraordinary modeling paper on black hole formation in the prestigious journal Nature. It is a difficult and technical paper, but well worth the effort. Black holes are understood almost exclusively by indirect methods and models such as this one. By definition, they cannot be seen, except by their surrounding fiery halo, or the gravitational waves when two merge; but they remain one of the most impressive and enigmatic structures in the universe. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-0873-4 View in LinkedIn

GRAVITATIONAL COLLAPSE. “We see that the infall speed always exceeds the effective sound speed at some enclosed mass, indicating that, at this scale, the thermal and turbulent support cannot support the gas against gravitational collapse.” https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-0873-4 View in LinkedIn

EARLY TRANSITION. “In the earliest stage of eusociality, the offspring remaining in the nest would be expected to assume the worker role, in conformity with the preexisting behavioral ground rule inherited from the pre-eusocial ancestor. Subsequently, a morphological worker caste can emerge by a further genetic change in which the expression of genes for maternal care is rerouted to precede foraging, thus reversing the normal sequence in the adult developmental ground plan of the ancestor.” https://lnkd.in/drgWvGT View in LinkedIn
