SERRATIA MARCESCENS is a pathogenic bacteria involved in hospital acquired infections, but before the 1950s it was erroneously thought to be non pathogenic. The US military dispersed in over San Francisco in "Operation Sea Spray" in 1950. Eleven people died of rare UTI infections thought to be related, but unproven.
