THE UGLY SHADOW OF EUGENICS skews rational discussions about human reproductive choices, be it artificial insemination, skewing the characteristics of the offspring, or further afield in the murky territory of cloning humans. AVOIDING GENETIC DISEASE STIRS WRATH. "The technology allows for a woman who has a mitochondrial disease to use another healthy woman’s egg, followed by standard in vitro fertilization, to conceive a healthy baby. EMBRYO SCREENING for inherited diseases always provokes the objections of designer babies, which is a shallow code for eugenics. A screening method called karyomapping can screen for genetic defects aneuploidy (abnormal chromosome number) at the same time.
