The intimate genetic, molecular and physiological relationship between embryo and the placenta, as well as with its microbiome, which modulates according to trimester, and the early fetal inoculation of its own microbiome from the vaginal passage and colostrum argue that an artificial womb would be extremely challenging. SURROGATE MECHANICAL WOMBS have an enormous, if not insuperable, barrier to overcome: the nurturing hormonal maternal environment, and the epigenetic changes by trimester, that took evolution so long to perfect, not to mention the electrophysiological intimacy with the mother.
