FOOD REGULATION differences between the US and Europe is poignantly highlighted by current US/EU free trade discussions. Very real issues are at stake, and very big money. This debate gets to the enormous differences in approaches towards food regulation between the two cultures, and serves to highlight two worlds so far apart, separated by the Atlantic. CHLORINE in water purification has been my focus for the last series of blogs, and I have kept on with this topic because it is pretty important, so bear with me. Chlorine is also used extensively, in some countries, for disinfecting poultry, meat, eggs, and fresh fruit and vegetables. The next series will look at these issues. We live in a chlorinated world. They rank: permanganate (Score of 14, high number is best), ozone (11), chloramine (10), ozone/peroxide (9), chlorine or chloramine (5), ozone (3).
