This appears to be a move towards in vitro screening of patient subset tissues for new drug candidates, or a 'zero phase' clinical trial, rather than screening in animal disease models. This is another branch, it seems, of the recognition of the power of personalized medicine: patient subpopulations with reduced heterogeneity. Animal models can be poor predictors of clinical efficacy in man, and for many diseases, there are not even such imperfect models.
