ALTHOUGH A FAR CRY FROM THE DECADE OF THE BRAIN INITIATIVE, every small step forward is worth counting. THE BRAIN MAP initiative of 100 M USD will do good. http://lnkd.in/-_2-cG View in LinkedIn
BROWSING IN A BOOKSHOP HAS A DIFFERENT OUTCOME THAN A ONE-CLICK SEARCH. An Amazon search for a subject usually gives you a relatively narrow set of results. By contrast, browsing randomly in a bookstore leads you to many unexpected places. Linear research may be likened to the Amazon experience -- you generally find what you are looking for; by contrast, nonlinear research methods can lead to the unexpected. If you have the leisure, the latter path may yield the greatest treasures. View in LinkedIn
TELEMEDICINE KIOSKS IN PHARMACIES ARE LOGICAL and make sense, for triaging minor ailments and avoiding the overuse of the ED. It is also one step closer to a Doc-In-A-Box, which is also logical. Can Medicine be reduced to sophisticated algorithms and a set of hypotheses based on physical data points? I think the answer still is yes. But our discomfort with the answer has less to do with feasibility than the hunan factor. Many older patients see a doctor for psychological reassurance, for non-medical reasons, and no machine can replace that, including telemetry. http://lnkd.in/tMa5WJ View in LinkedIn
SMART MATERIALS AND DIAGNOSTICS have a transformative opportunity to change diagnostics as we know them. Already George Church at Harvard has come up with a revolutionary flashdrive DNA sequencer using nano-materials. During the coming five years, the field of biosensors and diagnostics is going to transform from big costly instruments to small Point of Care devices with a large drop in costs. Two considerations: one is the regulatory path and how that limits upgrade flexibility. The second is the addressable markets and the degree of test interpretation sophistication. View in LinkedIn

From biological interventions on gingivitis, enzymatic plaque removal, and to tooth buds, there are many possibilities to bring this discipline into the 21st century. View in LinkedIn
FAIR PRICING FOR RARE DISEASE DRUGS: two truths operate here. First, innovators must be incentivized. Second, prices are way out of line. One approach for consideration by pricing agencies is to take the sum an innovator invested, and set the return on investment in line with a mean of brand Pharma. That way benchmarks fairness to both the Pharma company and to patients. View in LinkedIn
PARTNERING WITH A BIG COMPANY REQUIRES SECURING AN INTERNAL CHAMPION. If you are presenting your technology with the aim of partnering, unless you can identify and get on your side (both) an internal champion with authority, the odds are you will fail. And in big companies, people often change responsibilities. I have seen many cases where the tech company secured a great champion, and late in the process the champion was reassigned and the whole dating game had to restart. That is rarely good news. http://lnkd.in/gxpS3A View in LinkedIn
