MASS GENERAL HOSPITAL's BIO-KIDNEY SHOWS PROOF OF CONCEPT by making urine. This is a phenomenal achievement, Back in the mid 1990's I tried unsuccessfully to raise money for a bio-kidney project, and at the same time a team at U Massachusetts was investigating a bio-pancreas (without success). However, today we know so much more about stem cells and how to engineer them. This is a very positive step towards growing artificial organs. " "" " http://lnkd.in/BRB3Bs View in LinkedIn

BROWSING IN A BOOKSHOP HAS A DIFFERENT OUTCOME THAN A ONE-CLICK SEARCH. An Amazon search for a subject usually gives you a relatively narrow set of results. TELEMEDICINE KIOSKS IN PHARMACIES ARE LOGICAL and make sense, for triaging minor ailments and avoiding the overuse of the ED. It is also one step closer to a Doc-In-A-Box, which is also logical. Can Medicine be reduced to sophisticated algorithms and a set of hypotheses based on physical data points? I think the answer still is yes. But our discomfort with the answer has less to do with feasibility than the hunan factor. Many older patients see a doctor for psychological reassurance, for non-medical reasons, and no machine can replace that, including telemetry. http://lnkd.in/tMa5WJ View in LinkedIn

SMART MATERIALS AND DIAGNOSTICS have a transformative opportunity to change diagnostics as we know them. Already George Church at Harvard has come up with a revolutionary flashdrive DNA sequencer using nano-materials. During the coming five years, the field of biosensors and diagnostics is going to transform from big costly instruments to small Point of Care devices with a large drop in costs. Two considerations: one is the regulatory path and how that limits upgrade flexibility. The second is the addressable markets and the degree of test interpretation sophistication. View in LinkedIn

DENTISTRY STILL RELIES ON MECHANICAL SOLUTIONS TODAY. Overall, dentistry has changed little in a long time: drilling, scraping, pulling and gluing. This field is ripe for biological interventions. From biological interventions on gingivitis, enzymatic plaque removal, and to tooth buds, there are many possibilities to bring this discipline into the 21st century. View in LinkedIn

FAIR PRICING FOR RARE DISEASE DRUGS: two truths operate here. First, innovators must be incentivized. Second, prices are way out of line. One approach for consideration by pricing agencies is to take the sum an innovator invested, and set the return on investment in line with a mean of brand Pharma. That way benchmarks fairness to both the Pharma company and to patients. View in LinkedIn
