This is a phenomenal achievement, Back in the mid 1990's I tried unsuccessfully to raise money for a bio-kidney project, and at the same time a team at U Massachusetts was investigating a bio-pancreas (without success). By contrast, browsing randomly in a bookstore leads you to many unexpected places. Linear research may be likened to the Amazon experience -- you generally find what you are looking for; by contrast, nonlinear research methods can lead to the unexpected. TELEMEDICINE KIOSKS IN PHARMACIES ARE LOGICAL and make sense, for triaging minor ailments and avoiding the overuse of the ED. It is also one step closer to a Doc-In-A-Box, which is also logical. Can Medicine be reduced to sophisticated algorithms and a set of hypotheses based on physical data points? I think the answer still is yes. But our discomfort with the answer has less to do with feasibility than the hunan factor. Already George Church at Harvard has come up with a revolutionary flashdrive DNA sequencer using nano-materials. During the coming five years, the field of biosensors and diagnostics is going to transform from big costly instruments to small Point of Care devices with a large drop in costs. FAIR PRICING FOR RARE DISEASE DRUGS: two truths operate here. First, innovators must be incentivized. Second, prices are way out of line. One approach for consideration by pricing agencies is to take the sum an innovator invested, and set the return on investment in line with a mean of brand Pharma.
