"PHOTOSYNTHESIS provides energy for almost all life on Earth. This energy, in the form of photons, is absorbed by light-harvesting antennas as an electronic excitation. This excitation is then transported from each antenna to a reaction centre where charge separation creates more stable forms of chemical energy." https://lnkd.in/eRUdQZj View in LinkedIn

SOME ANCIENT microorganisms have learned to borrow their ATP. "E. cuniculi also uses these proteins to steal ATP from its eukaryotic host to sustain its lifestyle as an obligate intracellular parasite. Here we show that, consistent with this hypothesis, all four E. cuniculi transporters can transport ATP, and three of them are expressed on the surface of the parasite when it is living inside host cells." https://lnkd.in/eA9SjDZ View in LinkedIn

VIRUSES CONSUME HOST ATP. "The concentration of ATP is reduced in HCV-infected cells...These results suggest that ATP is actively consumed during viral replication in HCV replicon cells, leading to decreased levels of ATP in the cytoplasm." ATP SYNTHESIS. "Conventional biological models described the electrons as hopping from molecule to molecule within mitochondria, but — once again — this simple picture cannot account for the speed at which ATP is spit out... a (new) model in which, rather than hopping, the electrons exist in a quantum superposition, smeared out at once across all the molecules in the ATP production line...calculations predicted a boosted ATP production rate, as seen in experiments." http://discovermagazine.com/2014/dec/17-this-quantum-life View in LinkedIn

NOT A STORED FUEL. "ATP is an energy-coupling agent and not a fuel. It is not a storehouse of energy set aside for some future need. Rather it is produced by one set of reactions and is almost immediately consumed by another. Energy metabolism is therefore mostly self-regulating." https://lnkd.in/eN5s-r4 View in LinkedIn

NOVEL CRYPTOBIOSIS. "This would be something new to biologists, even if it might seem trivial to physicists. It would have implications concerning the physical extremes organisms can tolerate, the search for extraterrestrial life, and our philosophical view of animation." http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10539-015-9500-4 View in LinkedIn
