SOIL DRUGS. "Reintroducing microorganisms into the soil, together with the organic matter that they feed upon, has the potential to be a key part in the next big revolution of human health -- the development of sustainable agriculture and food security based on restored soil health. Just as in the case of the human microbiome, the soil drugs of the future are the ones full of friendly germs, and the foods they like to eat." https://lnkd.in/eyzuPzu View in LinkedIn

UNCULTURABLE. "Taking into consideration that >99% of environmental microbes are still unculturable under laboratory conditions, application of metagenomic approach has great advantages for investigating the structure and functional potentials of various microbial communities." https://lnkd.in/e5gJ7Hi View in LinkedIn

OPTICAL CILIAL WAVEGUIDES. "As they bear structural resemblance to centrioles, these cilia may act as waveguides for photons in the visible, ultraviolet and infrared spectra in human cells, while simultaneously extracting quantum information on polarization, angular and orbital momentum from photons." https://lnkd.in/eTtJ_KE View in LinkedIn

NO BRIGHT LINE. "In undisturbed ecosystems, plants are associated with a continuum of other organisms, the majority of which are microbial. These include epiphytes on plant surfaces, endophytes within plants, and rhizosphere and soil microbes associated with subsurface plant organs and soil interfaces. These microbiomes sequester significant amounts of atmospheric C, thus aiding in mitigation of climate change." https://lnkd.in/eQvzCYA View in LinkedIn

PHOTORECEPTORS. "Rod and cone cells contain a thin ‘connecting cilium’ that bridges the inner and outer segments of the cell. In fact, the light-sensitive portion of the photoreceptors is a modified primary cilium. Photons that arrive at rhodopsin molecules in the outer segment would have first passed through these cilia." https://lnkd.in/eTtJ_KE View in LinkedIn

CULTURAL CHANGE. So ends our journey into the world of living soils. The hope is that current research, concurrent with that of the human microbiome, provides evidence and impetus to deviate from the self-destructive path of intensive chemical farming. As data on equivalent yields are paired with evidence of increased nutritional crop value, at comparable or lower costs, and long-term soil health, the transition to bio-based farming is given momentum. "GLOBAL DATABASES increasingly facilitate developing models that illustrate the multi-scaled interactions between plants, microbes, humans, and changing environments. Such robust, multi-scaled models will enable users to thoroughly assess benefits and risks associated with new crop technologies. These models should help prevent the kinds of unintended consequences of the GR." (Green Revolution). https://lnkd.in/eQvzCYA View in LinkedIn
