ARTIFICIAL BONE for dental and orthopedic surgeries has been a challenging major unmet need in medicine. New bone implants must conform perfectly to anatomic geography, not be rejected by the body, and have some of the remarkable strength and flexibility properties of natural bone. Strategies to achieve this have included bone glues, collagens, and bone grafts to recruit stem cells and growth factors. New seeding technologies using nano ceramics are also under investigation. Consolidation among mid-sized specialty Pharma companies continues to shrink this pool of companies. Now there are just a handful of players who have not been merged or bought, and the likelihood is that the trend will continue. This is particularly true for those companies like Activis whose strategy is growth by acquisition not by slow organic growth. FDA 483 Warning Letters are becoming quite frequent for pharmaceutical manufacturers, and the consequences can be dire in the worst case. Unfortunately, the "right way" to respond is complicated. For sure, there are legions of experts and consulting firms, who can be very valuable. But at the end of the day, after all the consultants and lawyers have had a go at the response, it is critical to ask if the company and the FDA are on the same planet in terms of communicating.
