COOL DEFENSE. "Cooler temperatures enhance survival after infection and alter expression of immune-related genes in flies. This effect appears to be due not only to the fact that colder temperatures slow down bacterial growth, but also to the beneficial effects of cooler temperature on immune function. We explore the possibility that heat shock proteins, and in particular, Hsp83, may improve immune function at cool temperatures." https://lnkd.in/e3X3wii View in LinkedIn

HEATING DEFENSE. "Caterpillars of Platyprepia virginalis that had previously been infected by the tachinid parasitoid, Thelaira americana, were more likely to bask on dead vegetation than were unparasitized caterpillars. This behavior was associated with elevated body temperatures compared to individuals that were not basking." https://lnkd.in/ers5cYr View in LinkedIn

VIRAL REMAINS DRIVE EVOLUTION. "Mobile elements within genomes have driven genome evolution in diverse ways. Particularly in plants and mammals, retrotransposons have accumulated to constitute a large fraction of the genome and have shaped both genes and the entire genome." https://lnkd.in/eiBC2Fd View in LinkedIn

BEHAVIORAL FEVER. "Zebrafish display behavioural fever that acts to promote extensive and highly specific temperature-dependent changes in the brain transcriptome. The observed coupling of the immune response to fever acts at the gene–environment level to promote a robust, highly specific time-dependent anti-viral response that, under viral infection, increases survival." https://lnkd.in/enUcngE View in LinkedIn

PLAN OR PROCESS? Enrico Coen: "Organisms are not simply manufactured according to a set of instructions. There is no easy way to separate instructions from the process of carrying them out, to distinguish plan from execution." "SUPPRESSION DRIVES reduce the size of the targeted population. These ‘genetic load’ drives would spread rapidly through minimally impaired heterozygotes when rare, and eventually cause the population to crash or even become extinct due to the accumulated load of recessive mutations." https://lnkd.in/ewXxsGD View in LinkedIn

HOMING. "Because copying causes the fraction of offspring that inherit the cassette to be greater than 1/2, these genes can drive through a population even if they reduce the reproductive fitness of the individual organisms that carry them. Over many generations, this self-sustaining process can theoretically allow a gene drive to spread from a small number of individuals until it is present in all members of a population." https://lnkd.in/ewXxsGD View in LinkedIn
