This appears to be a move towards in vitro screening of patient subset tissues for new drug candidates, or a ‘zero phase’ clinical trial, rather than screening in animal disease models. This is another branch, it seems, of the recognition of the power of personalized medicine: patient subpopulations with reduced heterogeneity. Animal models can be poor predictors of clinical efficacy in man, and for many diseases, there are not even such imperfect models. This may also be a technology on the verge of the awesome dream of being able to manufacture human organ in the test tube.
