FRAGMENT IN NATURE. We have seen how plant roots have elaborate layered defensive systems to keep out microbial pathogens. At the same time, these same roots have developed intimate elaborate relationships with synergistic soil microorganisms. Mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots are deeply interdependent, and have maintained these relationships for millions of years. This is the topic for a couple of weekends.
