PHASE SYMMETRY. “The diploid phase is characterized by heterococcoliths, which show radial symmetry and are formed of a limited number (typically <100) of calcite crystals with complex strongly modified shapes. The haploid phase, by contrast, is characterized by holococcoliths which lack the strong radial symmetry of heterococcoliths and are formed of numerous (several hundred to a few thousand) minute (ca. 0.1 μm), equant calcite crystallites."
