SO ENDS the tiptoes into the simplicity that underpins complexity in the natural world. It is intuitive that complexity did not just arose full-blown at the first instant, and that simple systems gradually complexified to create the bigger system. The fly in the ointment is that gnarly thing called Emergence, wherein the sum is greater than its (simple) parts.
