UNIVERSITIES DRIVE THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY. A societal commitment to creating and funding excellence in research institutions, cutting-edge science and peer-reviewed publications, and the submission of technology patents is a pre-requisite for an emerging Knowledge Economy. These patents generate licensing revenues for the university and spinout companies. The trickle-down on local economies can at its best generate a Silicon Valley or a Boston. TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE. In grad school, my Professor could not be persuaded to stop accepting small fees from industry, and instead fund his lab by setting up a private company. It was seen as dirty. Five years later, he was on five boards and had got the message loud and clear. Translational medicine is about moving concepts to patients. Translational science is about putting great ideas to work to solve big societal problems. Academic-industry partnerships have time and again spawned new industries, jobs, innovation, and wealth.
