MITOCHONDRIA CONTROL cellular life and death. "Thus, with a relatively small number of proteins, mitochondria operate as highly specialized cellular sentinels that continuously monitor the conditions of the cell to finely adapt its metabolic activity, to coordinate adaptive responses to stress, and to decide on its final and inexorable fate. Not bad for an intracellular bug." http://circres.ahajournals.org/content/111/9/1198.full View in LinkedIn

MITOCHONDRIA REPROGRAMMED animal cells to control a wide array of critical functions, including energy production, cell death, cell signalling, inate immunity and others. As ancient symbiotic bacteria living within animal and plant cells, these clever organisms have learned to reprogram all life on this planet except viruses, which are curious in themselves. https://lnkd.in/epSmiFg View in LinkedIn

REPROGRAMMING. "The mitochondria are reprogrammed in many different clinical conditions from diabetes, obesity, cancer and numerous genetic defects as well as viral infections and wound healing." The ancient bacterial powerhouse of our cells has figured all this out during millennia of evolution. https://lnkd.in/eE2z3WE View in LinkedIn

MITOCHONDRIA are the powerhouses of the animal cell, without which we would not be alive. They originated from ancient bacteria, as did chloroplasts, which are the powerhouses of plants. Now we have a view in mitichondria as very sophisticated machines. Ancient bacteria thus control the most key biochemistry in almost all living things on this planet. No small achievement. DNA PROGRAMMING OF MITOCHONDRIA "generally regulates all of the proteins associated with a metabolic or biosynthetic pathway associated with a given function." In other words, the mitochondrion is the master switch of the cell. The same is true of the chloroplast in plants. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3209511/ View in LinkedIn

MASTER-SWITCH FLEXIBILITY. "The nuclear DNA transcriptional programming of the mitochondrion proteome varies dramatically between tissues depending on its functional requirements," and varies considerably in disease. This adaptation by ancient bacteria to a highly complex host is very intimate and complete. https://lnkd.in/eE2z3WE View in LinkedIn

BUT A PASSENGER. Chloroplasts and mitochondria, the indispensable powerhouses of every cell, and perhaps even the very nucleus, let alone our microbiome within, are likely all of microbial origin. As much as originating from apes hurt Victorian religious sensibilities, this new worldview would have shattered them. http://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/force-through-green-fuse-drives-flower View in LinkedIn
