MITOCHONDRIA are the powerhouses of the animal cell, without which we would not be alive. They originated from ancient bacteria, as did chloroplasts, which are the powerhouses of plants. Now we have a view in mitichondria as very sophisticated machines. Ancient bacteria thus control the most key biochemistry in almost all living things on this planet. No small achievement.
