SCENT AND OTHER FUNCTIONS. "Odor might have secondary functions in the human body." When five olfactory receptors present in human skin were exposed to high concentrations of synthetic sandalwood, they triggered a robust skin healing response, suggesting that in an odd way, skin can sense scents by smelling them with the same receptors that occur in the nose. https://lnkd.in/eUXpx3h View in LinkedIn

SCENT RECEPTORS AND MICROBIOME. Scent receptors found in kidneys "are a previously unknown means for bacteria to tell the kidney to make blood pressure changes that allow them to best carry out their health-related functions." One of many remarkable examples of the intimate control of our lives by bacteria. https://lnkd.in/b4XiePB View in LinkedIn

DIVERSE EXPRESSION. Olfactory receptor (OR) gene "expression has been reported in non-olfactory tissues, principally the testes, but also taste tissues, prostrate, primordial germ cells, erythroid cells, heart and notochord," and is thought to help guide spermatozoa to the egg; also found in the bladder, kidney, spine, sinuses, pancreas, brain and muscle, and at low levels in almost all tissues. https://lnkd.in/eib7SgQ View in LinkedIn

GENETICS OF OLFACTION. "The olfactory receptor (OR) family is "one of the largest known mammalian gene families, with around 900 genes in human and 1500 in mouse. OR genes code G-protein-coupled receptors containing seven transmembrane domains," some of the more complicated receptor families known. https://lnkd.in/eib7SgQ View in LinkedIn

SENSOMICS. "Sperm cells are known to contain odor receptors, which are thought to play a role in helping the sperm locate the egg. Growing evidence now suggests these receptors are also found in the heart, lungs and blood," and blood cells will tend to migrate towards odors. https://lnkd.in/eigZNr2 View in LinkedIn

SMELL AND EMOTION. "The perception of smell consists not only of the sensation of the odours themselves but of the experiences and emotions associated with these sensations. Smells can evoke strong emotional reactions. In surveys on reactions to odours, responses show that many of our olfactory likes and dislikes are based purely on emotional associations." https://lnkd.in/eaYYGTR View in LinkedIn

KINDRED SCENTS. "Humans can detect individuals that are blood-related kin (mothers/fathers and children but not husbands and wives) from olfaction. Mothers can identify by body odor their biological children but not their stepchildren. Preadolescent children can olfactorily detect their full siblings but not half-siblings or step siblings and this might explain incest avoidance and the Westermarck effect." https://lnkd.in/e9z896Q View in LinkedIn
