THE ISSUE OF PATTERN MEMORY. “Morphogen models described by diffusion-reaction dynamics unfold with no “memory” of the system state other than the current state. The neural model, however, is a sensory feedback system in which the current secretion depends on sensing the history of the pattern before the current state.” https://lnkd.in/dwfZQzE View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this first of two weekends on a spectacular Russian paper on finding intact organisms outside the ISS space station, and their five year investigation of the topic, with careful controls. This builds on many reports of experimental organism survival in outer space, including lichens and tardigrades. Humanity has been willfully blind about the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and has spent a pitiful amount of money and effort investigating this topic, possibly out of fear of causing public unrest. SHELL PATTERNINGS. “Our analyses have allowed us to estimate the shell pigmentation patterns of ancestral species, identify lineages in which one or more parameters have evolved rapidly, and measure the degree to which different parameters correlate with the phylogeny.” https://lnkd.in/dwfZQzE View in LinkedIn

NEURAL PATTERNING. “We have taken a step in applying modern phylogenetic methods to understanding the development of complex phenotypic characters. The pigmentation patterns of Conus shells can be generated by a neural-network model that has a sound anatomical and physiological basis.” https://lnkd.in/dwfZQzE View in LinkedIn
