DO YOUNG EMPLOYEES NEED A DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT STYLE? This author believes it is the case that Old School leadership is mot what works on the under 35 staffers. Top-down, authoritarian, rigid, very stratified in need to know, secretive and non-inclusive: all classic Old School. But beyond a disastrous era of dot-bomb CEOs with skateboards and pingpong tables, we have not come to terms with a new style of bringing out the best of our young people. BIOSPRING BARCELONA is a testament to the status of the biopharma industry in Catalunya, and to the years of very successful public and private initiatives and investment in the sector. I have posted this before but it bears repeating: CATALUNYA FEELS LIKE BOSTON IN 1989, when the biotech industry took off in the US. I was there. It has infrastructure, universities, an entrepreneurial culture, and sources of early capital. There is a tangible buzz of excitement here. THE FRENCH ANTIPATHY TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP appears to be thawing, thanks to women entrepreneurs. This trait exists in Spain and Japan also, where being part of the group and not "unusual" trumps starting a new company.
