IN PURSUIT OF BUTTERFLIES, by Matthew Oates. Attended the launch of this book by popular TV personality, and dear boyhood friend at the Natural History Museum in London. Between sense of place and passion for the Purple Emperor butterfly, among others, it was a gathering of the best of true British eccentrics besotted with, and devoted to, these lovely creatures for half a century. MITOCHONDRIA are the powerhouses of the animal cell, without which we would not be alive. They originated from ancient bacteria, as did chloroplasts, which are the powerhouses of plants. Now we have a view in mitichondria as very sophisticated machines. Ancient bacteria thus control the most key biochemistry in almost all living things on this planet. No small achievement.
