Burial of the Dead Sardine

Material used: Fine Grained Spanish Sandstone, Sarcophagus in Coarse Grained Spanish Sandstone.

‘Entierro de la sardina’ is my favorite Spanish fiesta celebrating the end of carnival on Ash Wednesday which symbolizes the burial of the past to allow society to be reborn and transformed with new vigour. In Tenerife, I witnessed this fiesta occupied by hundreds of people and included parades in full mourning clothes and public displays of grief as the sardine is led to its final incineration. This sculpture suggests the eternal cycle of growth, death, and rebirth beneath the oppressive sarcophagus.
