SEVILLE CATHEDRAL’S CARVED STONE FEASTS. “For almost 500 years, the arch that connects the largest Gothic cathedral in the world with its Renaissance sacristy has offered visitors a sumptuous, if little glimpsed – and even less studied – vision of religious bounty.” Stunningly detailed plates of food, ethnically cleansed by the commissioning bishop. https://lnkd.in/d_YajSaa View in LinkedIn

GALAXY EVOLUTION. “Discovering the process by which the dense, gravitationally bound galaxies formed in the Universe from an initially almost uniform gas, and understanding the way their constituent populations of stars were born is a key goal of modern physical cosmology.” https://lnkd.in/dAkZ_ejH View in LinkedIn

GENEALOGY PLAYERS. “It is expected that galaxy-scale winds, triggered by the large amount of energy released in the BH accretion process, play a crucial role in regulating the BH-host galaxy co-evolution, shaping the SFH and BH accretion history itself.” ( BH = black hole; SFH = star-formation histories). https://lnkd.in/dHcpNrnR View in LinkedIn

COSMIC TIME SCALES. “The rapid enrichment by metals and dust at very high redshift discussed above suggests that quasar host galaxies could have undergone intense episodes of star formation. Similar chemical abundances are typically found in local galaxies which, however, evolved on longer time scales.” https://lnkd.in/dHcpNrnR View in LinkedIn

QUASAR ROLE. “Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centres of galaxies are known to actively accrete, forming so-called `active galactic nuclei' (AGN) or `quasars'. These AGN are believed to feed back energy into their host galaxies, regulating star formation and the growth of the SMBH itself.” https://lnkd.in/d9BB4wDY View in LinkedIn

LARGE FAST WINDS. “High velocity (10(2)–10(3) km s−1) energy-driven winds on large scales have been recently also studied by Bieri et al. by means of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of isolated galactic discs. They suggest that outflow rates as high as ~10(3) M⊙ yr−1 are sustained by IR radiation, with scattering on dust grains enabling efficient momentum transfer to the gas.” (IR = infrared). https://lnkd.in/dHcpNrnR View in LinkedIn
