ADVENTURA CAPITAL is a new Barcelona portal to international partnering and capital. Chaired by the renowned UK Mentor, Oliver Rothschild, we want to add something missing in Catalunyan tech companies: access to foreign capital and partners through international experts and mentors. We will work collaboratively with existing agencies in Spain, not duplicate services. ONLINE VERSUS RESIDENTIAL EDUCATION: the debate is defined. But more than that, this conference by Harvard and MIT are challenging the way teaching occurs, making it more interactive, less didactic. This appears to be in response to what students want (and pay for). Back in my day, we were the first medical school to adopt the case study method, and at Harvard College I got the students to teach the class on the molecular basis of disease. DO YOUNG EMPLOYEES NEED A DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT STYLE? This author believes it is the case that Old School leadership is mot what works on the under 35 staffers. Top-down, authoritarian, rigid, very stratified in need to know, secretive and non-inclusive: all classic Old School. But beyond a disastrous era of dot-bomb CEOs with skateboards and pingpong tables, we have not come to terms with a new style of bringing out the best of our young people. BIOSPRING BARCELONA is a testament to the status of the biopharma industry in Catalunya, and to the years of very successful public and private initiatives and investment in the sector. I have posted this before but it bears repeating: CATALUNYA FEELS LIKE BOSTON IN 1989, when the biotech industry took off in the US. I was there. It has infrastructure, universities, an entrepreneurial culture, and sources of early capital. There is a tangible buzz of excitement here. THE FRENCH ANTIPATHY TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP appears to be thawing, thanks to women entrepreneurs. This trait exists in Spain and Japan also, where being part of the group and not "unusual" trumps starting a new company.
